It is true that those negative marks affect your credit score but the old rules have changed in how your credit score is calculated. Things I thought would and did use to help your credit score can now hurt it and things that used to hurt your credit score now help it. </span></p> <p><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>In the past closing rarely used credit cards helped improve your credit score. The logic was that if you had the credit available you would use it so your debt ratio would be higher. Now I have learned that the opposite is true and the wider the gap between your current balances and your credit limit the better. Percentage of available credit is one of the heaver weighted factors that goes into your credit score. With that in mind, you may think a good strategy to improve your credit score might be to pay down your credit card balances as quickly as possible. Well that too may be a mistake. Lately credit card companies have been monitoring their clients accounts for changes in credit behavior. Things such as changing the type of places you use your card and changes in payment amounts raise red flags. Make a much larger than usual principle payment and you may just find that your credit limit has been reduced. If your credit limit is reduced then the percentage of available credit is also lower which, in turn, will lower your credit score. </span></p> <p><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>We have learned that diversifying our investments is important but did you know that diversifying your credit and banking relationships could be even more important? If a majority of your credit is coming from the same financial institution you could be opening yourself up for a credit crisis. If you were to cross one of the financial institutions ever changing lines you may find that all of your credit with them has been reduced or even cut off.&nbsp; It is vitally important to get credit from as many different sources as possible. Unfortunately, these days, with banks closing and merging on an almost daily basis diversification becomes harder. If you are considering a short sale or foreclosure in the future diversification is not just important it is vital. You must be sure that the financial institution that holds the mortgage on your property is not owned by a bank where your money is deposited or you may find that in the short sale/foreclosure process that they took the money out of your account.&nbsp;&nbsp; </span></p> <p><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>With all the changes in the credit world it may seem that we are at the mercy of circumstance when it comes to our credit score. However just as we have strategies to reduce your taxes there are strategies for great credit. For example, did you know that adding your name to parents low balance high limit credit card can drastically improve your credit score?</span> </p> <p><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>How do I know all of this and more about credit? Am I some kind of credit expert? No, far from it but I have team. I found a credit expert to add to my personal financial team. He has been advising me on improving and maintaining Diana s and my credit. It has been such a relief to have a strategy for credit and someone I can go to with my many questions.
