They think the rich should pay for it. That's the finding from a new Associated Press poll, and it could be a boost for House Democrats, who have proposed taxing upper-income people to fund their sweeping remake of the U.S. medical system. AP </p> <p>That was the news story that greeted me when I opened Yahoo yesterday. Then today, I started my car just in time to hear the news story explaining that about 15 million people will owe additional taxes due to the  Making Work Pay Credit included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act passed last February (the stimulus package). This is should not be news to anybody who listened to our Stimulus Package Teleconference back on March 10 when I said this would happen. The extra $400 that you got from the Making Work Pay Credit may need to be paid back. What, you don t remember getting a $400 credit?! Don t feel bad, most people did not realize they got it. You see, you got this credit through reduced federal withholding from your pay check. Your federal withholding has been reduced by about $13 per week, so now you know why you have so much extra money these days. The problem is if you had more than one job or if you are married and both you and your spouse have jobs you probably had your withholding reduced too much and come April you will need to pay back the government. </p> <p>These news items illustrate that higher taxes are in the future for all of us. Sure, the largest tax increases will be on the rich, but do not think for a minute that if you make less than $250,000 you are off the hook. Let me bring one more news story to your attention, it came out last Friday. Buried in the House Healthcare Bill is a provision that will remove indexing from the tax code. Indexing is used to increase the dollar amounts on items such as tax brackets to remove the effects of inflation. With indexing gone and higher inflation almost a certainty many of us will creep into higher and higher tax brackets even though our income is just barely keeping up with inflation. </p> <p>As our economy remains depressed, or even gets worse, government agencies as well as people get desperate. You must know that people who are seen to be successful will be attacked: attacked by the government wanting its piece of their success and attacked by other, less successful people looking to solve their financial problems by suing. The solution is not to restrain your success and it is not even to hide the signs of your success. The solution is to be prepared for the attacks. Prepare for higher taxes through a solid tax strategy and diligent planning. Prepare for law suits with a solid entity strategy and keeping that stratgey current. The time to take action and prepare is now. The level of attack increases dramatically in down economies.
