for the business use of your car. First if you have not read my e-mail about the great deduction you can get for buying a new car this year, even if you don t use it for business, please go back to <a href="http://cts.vresp.com/c/?TaxThink/e4bbdfa668/7bc87d807d/8578b16496">the archives</a> and read the October 29, 2009 edition.</span> </p> <p><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>There are two ways to deduct your business vehicle expenses. You can use the actual expenses or the standard IRS per mile rate. In either case, it is absolutely necessary to keep track of both your business and personal miles. The more business miles you drive obviously the higher the deduction you can take. Our focus then is to make sure you are recording as many business miles as you are entitled to. In order to do that, we need to know what will count as business miles and what will not count. </span></p> <p><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Commuting is always considered personal miles. Commuting is defined as the trip from home to your first business stop of the day, and from your last business stop of the day to home. Driving to and from your  W-2 job is always personal even if you start at a business stop.&nbsp; As a client of mine learned the hard way, listening to educationally CDs that benefit your business on the way to the W-2 job will not change the fact that the miles are personal. </span></p> <p><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>There is another interesting idea I have seen frequently. Some people are under the impression that if they put a sign or even a full wrap on their car advertising their business that it would make all the miles deductible because they are out marketing. This seems like a good idea however the IRS does not agree with it. They will still limit your business miles based on where your trip started and where it ended. But at least the cost of the wrap is deductible. </span></p> <p><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>The commuting problem does not exist for people with home offices. If you have a home office your commute is down the hall with your bunny slippers. So long as you begin your day and end your day in your home office, all your business stops in between are business miles. If you do not have a home office, there is still an option. Your business can open a PO box near home. Stopping to check the PO box in the morning becomes your first business stop of the day. This makes your commute from home to the PO box. Then on the way home at the end of the day, you also check the box, making your commute again just the short distance from the PO box to home.</span> </p> <p><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>If a trip is both business and personal, it can be counted as business. For example, if I go to the grocery store (personal) and I also walk next door to the office supply store and buy some file folders, I put the miles down as a trip to the office supply store (business).&nbsp; Sometimes this takes a little planning, but I am sure you can find similar trips you make.&nbsp; I had a client who was very creative with this strategy.&nbsp; She was in the business of buying houses from people in need of a quick cash sale and then reselling the homes. She kept stacks of her  I will buy your house for cash fliers in her car. When she went to the mall (personal) she would put her flier on several of the windshields in the parking lot before she went shopping. She would mark down the trip as a canvassing trip (business). She even got several good leads from those fliers.&nbsp; </span></p> <p><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>As you can tell if we put a little thought into your driving we can legitimately add to your business miles and therefore add to the deduction for the business use of your car.
