This day used to be a lot more festive back in the days before e-filing. Hundreds of people gathered at post offices across the country.&nbsp; In many cities it would turn into a spontaneous party, complete with post office employees dressed as Uncle Sam, musicians, street entertainers and noise makers. Those days are gone now. Instead of handing the envelope with our tax return to a waving postal employee we move our mouse and click on transmit. Progress! </span><span style='font-size:7.5pt;line-height:115%;font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='line-height:115%'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>This morning our President told us that April 15th is a day to dread. He claims this dread is because the tax code is  far too complicated for most Americans to understand . As much as I hate to disagree with the President I must say that Americans are a lot smarter than we are given credit for. The tax code is not really that complicated. It s long, but not complicated. In fact, the majority of the tax code has nothing to do with most Americans, so in that respect&nbsp; it s not all that long either. Instead of saying that the tax code is  too complicated for most Americans he should just say what he means, that it is too complicated for most of his appointees. We all know that it is not too complicated for them either - that s just their excuse for cheating.&nbsp; </span><span style='font-size:7.5pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='line-height:115%'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>My outrage over the President s comments is that history has shown us that calls for  tax simplification are actually disguised schemes to increase taxes. Most of the  complications in the tax code are deductions. Some of you may be old enough to remember when personal interest, such as credit card interest, was deductible. This deduction was one of the  complications that was done away with in the name of  simplification . What  simplification meant then was higher taxes for people who pay interest. With the recent economic downturn this is one complication that many of us could have taken full advantage of right now. The last time we had a  tax simplification bill was during the Regan administration. In that bill, we traded many widely used deductions in for a lower overall tax rates. That sounds good but what has happened since has been a slow increase in tax rates with no increase in deductions. </span><span style='font-size:7.5pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='line-height:115%'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Not all tax simplification is bad, but no one, as far as I know, has tried simplifying things for the better. One major complication that should be removed is the income limits the tax code places on many deductions or other tax aspects. For example, people can deduct up to $25,000 of real estate losses unless they make more than $100,000. Another  complication &nbsp; reduces the itemized deductions for people who make more than about $159,000&nbsp; . The tax code is full of these  complications. I have no hope that this latest round of  simplification will be of this positive type since the President s own budget includes reductions in the deductions for charitable contributions and home mortgage interest for people who make more than $250,000. More complications!</span><span style='font-size:7.5pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='line-height:115%'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Some of you are thinking  Warren, you re just opposed to tax simplification because it will put you out of business. Not in the least! Tax simplification general involves individuals with W-2 income and no business. For taxpayers like that, there really isn t much we can do strategically to reduce their tax liability. With  simplification the few deductions that are left will more than likely disappear and they will be faced with a higher tax bill.
