This week I will depart from the usual tax topic to discuss a piece of history that has a lesson for all who are trying to grow their businesses. Next week, I promise to return to a tax topic but for now I wish to share some of the history of Jell-O with you. After all even with our busy schedules we still have room for Jell-O.</span><span style='font-size:7.5pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'> <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='line-height:115%'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>In 1845, the industrialist, inventor, and philanthropist, Peter Cooper, of Tom Thumb engine and Cooper Union fame, obtained the first patent for a gelatin dessert. Gelatin desserts became a hit however it was only a treat for the upper class. It was served at high society dinner parties and balls. The main problem with Gelatin is that it was time consuming to prepare and the ingredients were hard to come by and expensive. Therefore, the desert had not yet caught on with the masses.<br> &nbsp;</span><span style='font-size:7.5pt;line-height:115%;font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"'> <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='line-height:115%'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>One day, Peril Wait, a carpenter and cough medicine maker, tried the exotic dessert. This single encounter with the shimmering wiggly dessert was enough to launch his quest for any possible way to produce an easier, less expensive way to make Gelatin. So he began tinkering in his basement and in 1897 Peril finally figured it out. An easy inexpensive fruit flavored version of Peter Cooper s Gelatin was created. The name for the substance came quickly; Peril s wife took one look at the concoction and named it Jell-O. The first flavors were strawberry, raspberry, orange and lemon. Armed with a great product, a great name and 4 great flavors Peril set out to sell his Jell-O and make his millions.</span><span style='font-size:7.5pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='line-height:115%'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Despite the fact that Peril did not have marketing or a distribution plan, he did have an awesome new product. Peril figured that would be enough for success. How many other fledgling entrepreneurs have had similar thoughts about their product or service and launch into a business without a plan or even a clue what to do? Many investors also make this same mistake. They look at the fantastic idea behind the investment and figure it cannot miss. Doing all of this without considering the management s ability to execute on the concept.</span><span style='font-size:7.5pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='line-height:115%'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>It will come as no surprise to you that Peril Wait s Jell-O launch was a complete and utter failure. Without any marketing or sales skills and no team, Jell-O remained in Peril s basement gathering dust. The irony is that Peril s neighbor, Orator Woodward, owned a sales and marketing company that specialized in getting products into grocery stores across the country. If only Peril would have looked for help, even just within his own community, the world would be enjoying the refreshing dessert, Jell-O. But wait, this is a Jell-O world so we know this was not the end of the story.</span><span style='font-size:7.5pt; line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='line-height:115%'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>One afternoon in 1899, Orator was at Peril s house for no particular reason other than just being neighborly. The conversation eventually led to the basement. Where Orator noticed a dusty heap in the corner and asked Peril about it. Peril was far too embarrassed to discuss his business failure with his successful neighbor but after some persistent persuading he reluctantly told Orator about his invention. Orator immediately saw the potential to sell Jell-O through his already existing sales and distribution channels. Peril who already knew that Jell-O had no chance of success was not interested in joint venturing with his neighbor. Orator did not want to pass on the opportunity so he purchased the rights to Jell-O for a mere $450 and as they say,  the rest is history. </span><span style='font-size:7.5pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='line-height:115%'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Orator went on to make Jell-O a dessert staple around the world. Jell-O Company expanded their game and through multiple joint ventures and skillful acquisitions, in 1925 Jell-O Company became General Foods and now I can really say,  and the rest is history. Orator Woodward secured a legacy of wealth and prosperity for his family for generations. Peril Wait went on to relative obscurity adding very little opportunity for his family s destiny.</span><span style='font-size: 7.5pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='line-height:115%'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>The lessons are clear if we only choose to pay attention.
