What you don t remember getting it! It was the extra $7.69 per week that was on your paycheck. The  Making Work Pay Credit is $400 per year for most people, and you received it through a reduction in your withholding. (Good news, the President included an extension of this  most helpful middle class tax break in his 2010 budget!) The issue is that there was a second credit given to people eligible for social security and other government retirement programs. This credit was for $250 and was paid to all eligible people by way of a check mailed on May 17th. The Making Work Pay Credit is required to be reduced by this $250 credit and the only way to do this is to report it on your tax return. If you received a $250 check from the Social Security Administration last summer please let your tax preparer know. </span></p> <p><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>The other Item that you will need to let your tax preparer know about is any COBRA premium assistance you received. COBRA is the law which requires many employers to allow terminated employees to stay on their former employer s health insurance for up to 18 months. The employer is allowed to charge the former employee up to 102% of the cost of the insurance. Under the new law eligible terminated employees can only be charged up to 35% of the cost of the insurance for 15 months. This subsidy must end when the employee is covered under another plan or eligible for medicare. In addition, the subsidy is recaptured if the former employee s adjust gross income is over certain amounts. It is important to let your tax preparer know if you received this subsidy. </span></p> <p><strong><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>So much for the things that may increase your taxes, now for things that may reduce them!</span></strong><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'> The following is just a summary of some of the current tax breaks available. If you would like more details on any of these issues please contact our office or join our Thursday night call.<br> <strong><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Haitian Relief</span></strong>- Donations to Haitian relief&nbsp;&nbsp; made between January 11 and March 01, 2010 are deductible on your 2009 tax return. The donation must be made to a qualified American charitable organization, like the Red Cross. Please be sure to add these amounts when you report your charitable deductions to your tax preparer.<br> <strong><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Home Buyers Credit</span></strong>  The First Time Home Buyers Credit has been extended and expanded. It has been extend so that long-term home owners may qualify for a $6,500 credit, while first time home buyers still get an $8,000 credit. The deadline for purchasing a home has been extended to purchases made by 4/30/2010 or subject to a binding contract by 4/30/2010 and purchased by 6/30/2010. These credits can be claimed on your 2009 tax! The IRS is requiring a lot of documentation be filed with your return to claim this credit therefore you will not be allowed to e-file the return. If you are thinking about buying or have bought a home this year I highly recommend you extend your tax return.<br> <strong><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>College Expenses</span></strong> - The Hope Credit has been greatly expanded, so much so that it has a new name: The American Opportunities Credit. Many people who did not qualify in the past for the Hope Credit will now qualify for the new American Opportunities Credit.&nbsp; The Income limit has gone from $100,000 to $160,000 AND the credit can now be claimed for 4 years instead of only 2 years.&nbsp; On top of that, we can now add course materials, including computers and software, to the list of qualified expense. Please be sure to give your tax preparer all the college related expenses for your family. <br> <strong><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Sales Tax Deduction for New Cars</span></strong>- If you purchased a new car (used cars do not count) in 2009 you will have a few options for deducting the sales tax. Please let your tax preparer know that you purchased a new car in 2009 and provided them with amount of sales tax paid.<br> <strong><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Ponzi Scheme Loses</span></strong>- This is a complicated one. Basically, if you made an investment that you lost money in AND the investment was a fraud there is a tax break available to you. Please call and schedule a time to talk to us if you would like to know if this applies to your situation. <br> <strong><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Chinese Drywall</span></strong>- If you have had drywall installed in your home in the past 6 or 8 years and you have been experiencing any of the following: smell of rotten eggs; problems with appliances, air conditioning, pipes or electronic equipment; headaches; nosebleeds or respiratory problems the cause may be from chemicals used in drywall that was made in China. You may be eligible for a tax break to cover the cost of replacing the drywall. Please contact our office for more details.<br> <strong><span style='font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"'>Energy Credits</span></strong>- The rules for getting a tax credit for making your home more energy efficient have been simplified and the amount of the credit has been increased. For 2009 and 2010 you can get a 30% credit up to $1,500 for installing energy efficient property such as; heaters, air conditioners, water heaters, windows, doors etc. In order for these items to qualify the manufacturer must certify that they qualify.
